College of Japanese Language and Culture

The College of Japanese Language and Culture was founded with the aim of training knowledgeable and creative Japanese language educators who are good communicators of the Japanese language and culture. The Japanese language shapes Japanese culture, and Japanese culture shapes the Japanese language. With this as our basis, we strive to send out into the world people who have studied not only Japanese but also a wide variety of other languages, as well as Japanese culture, international education, and so on.

All students set their own goals from their first year of study on and, in accordance with these goals, take classes in the Field of Japanese Language and the Field of Culture. Our College emphasizes both language and culture, and the curriculum is designed so that students must take a good balance of courses in each field. Courses offered in the Field of Japanese Language include Modern Japanese, the History of Japanese, Linguistics, and Japanese Language Education. The Field of Culture offers Japanese History, Geography, Literature, Folklore, Intercultural Exchange, and so on. In the fall of their third year, students also select a research topic and begin working on their graduation thesis.

After graduation, some students find private-sector jobs related to finance, information, or the service industry. Others become Japanese teachers or public servants. Many who want to be Japanese language teachers go to graduate school for further study. Others pursue graduate studies in linguistics, Japanese history, international education, and so on.
